Aiyyaa (2012) Movie Review

Story: A different tale, the story begins with Meenakshi (rani) who hails from a middle class Maharashtrian family. She has a strong fixation for movies and film stars and loves to be in a world of her own. However, she gets attracted to a south Indian painter Surya (prithviraj) for the unusual reason that he smells good. But then there is a problem. Meenakshi gets engaged to Madhav (subodh bhave) who is the choice of her parents. Given Meenakshi’s fantasy and the situation on hand, how things take shape forms the rest of the story.   Presentation: The director has come up with a funny storyline and while the presentation was good, the narrative was entertaining.  The dialogues were well written, the script was not logical but enjoyable and the screenplay was good enough. Background score was nice and two songs are spicy chartbusters. Cinematography was excellent. Editing was required in few scenes though. Costumes were well designed while the art department was apt. Rani Mukherji is the life and soul for this film as she carries herself with good energy and vibrant act. Prithviraj was equally good and made his presence felt strongly. Subodh was effective, Nirmiti was hilarious, Jyoti was natural, Anita Date was awesome, Ameya Wagh was apt, Satish was standard, Pakada Pandi was funny. Conclusion: The very idea of having a middle class north Indian girl falling for a rugged south Indian man forms the plot of this film. Though it may not be too convincing on the outset, the entire film has been made on the premise of humor and good spirit. The first half goes about with elements of comedy and romance while the second half has got an angle of sentiment and emotional drama. Overall, this is a film which could appeal due to its different flavor and some brilliant performances. At the box office, it could be an above average grosser.  Verdict: Good screen chemistry and performances, different humor, can be watched once
